When to use:
- Share static, non-web-native assets: Use it to publish files like PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoints, ZIPs, installers, or datasets that users need to keep offline. Web-native content (HTML pages, articles) should be rendered as pages instead.
- Provide authoritative documents: When you must distribute controlled content such as SmPCs, PILs, safety notices, policy documents, SOPs, or validated guides where versioning, approval, and timestamping matter.
- Marketing collateral and resources: Whitepapers, brochures, eBooks, case studies, product sheets, and event materials—especially when you want clear calls to action and track engagement.
- Regulated or market-specific variants: When the file differs by language, market, or audience and Sitecore’s item versions/personalization will ensure the right download shows for each visitor.
- Gated access and lead capture: If you want to gate content behind forms, consent, or authentication, then serve the file via a controlled download component that can check access and trigger goals.
